Our Purpose

The Country Cabin is a music venue on Virginia's musical heritage highway, The Crooked Road.  The Country Cabin is owned and operated by Appalachian Traditions, Inc., a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve and perpetuate Appalachian traditions and culture, including music, mountain dance, storytelling, crafts and arts.

Country Cabin History

The Original Country Cabin was built in 1937-38 under President Roosevelt's WPA program.   Kate O'Neil Peters Sturgill, a local ballad singer and songwriter, was instrumental in the construction of the Cabin as a community recreation facility.  Local musicians would gather on weekends for square dances, box suppers, cake walks and other events.
     Until 2002, the community used the Cabin for its original and intended purpose.  It is listed on both state and national landmark registries.

 The Country Cabin II Complex was built across the road from the original Country Cabin in 2002 to accommodate larger audiences and to host a wider variety of programs than could be offered at the original Country Cabin.
     The Country Cabin II Complex with an added much larger facility offers family-oriented program, complete with cakewalks and broom dances.  Refreshments are available.   Occasional seasonal events, special programs, fundraisers, weddings, birthday parties, etc are held here.
